The Mid-Market area has been a rather rough section of San Francisco for decades, with urban renewal plan after urban renewal plan failing to take hold. But all that appears to be on the cusp of change as the city attempts to increase density along transit corridors. The Hub triumphantly returns!
Currently, The Hub is full of proposed developments with thousands of new housing units coming from big developments. At least eight development sites are in some stage of the entitlement process.
These developments will attract as many as 7,000 new residents to the area, with 33% of overall housing production being designated as affordable. The vision for The Hub is to transform it into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood with plenty of residential space, along with retail, office and restaurant space.
The Hub/Mid-Market area has already undergone some changes in the past few years. It started with sponsored street murals, which didn’t do much to revitalize the neighborhood. However, when Twitter moved into the old SF Furniture Mart building at the corner of Ninth and Market Streets, real changes started. Mayor Lee’s Twitter tax break was met with plenty of controversy back in 2012, but it was the magnet that attracted many other companies, including Zendesk, Square, Dolby, and Uber (until they head to Mission Bay). such as Zendesk moving into the area.
Burners love it too, even the burning-man art group Black Rock Arts Foundation has moved to the Mid-Market area. These moves have spurred development of high-rise condo and apartment buildings and are a big part of the new developments planned for The Hub.

Those seeking condos and high-rise apartments will find plenty of options within The Hub in the years to come. Right now, homes tend to be in smaller mid-rise or older wood-frame unit buildings. It’s exciting to see this formerly glorious San Francisco neighborhood making a comeback to reclaim its tarnished glory.
